What are ENERGY STAR® certified appliances?

ENERGY STAR® certified appliances are certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as products that meet energy efficiency specifications. These products can help reduce your energy and, in some cases, water usage, to help save on bills.

What is an ENERGY STAR® certified label?

An ENERGY STAR® certified label identifies products that are energy-efficient and help consumers save money on energy bills without sacrificing on performance, features and comfort. The blue ENERGY STAR® certified sticker can be found on appliances or on their Energy Guide label.

These labels are backed by the EPA to help reduce the inefficient use of energy and deliver savings on energy bills without sacrificing performance, features and comfort.

How does the ENERGY STAR® certified rating system work?

There is no specific rating system for ENERGY STAR® certified products, however, the EPA has introduced the “Most Efficient” distinction, which recognizes products that offer the most energy savings and environmental protection. Find out more about these products on the ENERGY STAR® website.

Which appliances can be ENERGY STAR® certified?

1. Refrigerators

In order to be ENERGY STAR® certified, refrigerators must use 10% less energy than the minimum federal efficiency standards. ENERGY STAR® certified refrigerators offer features like high-efficiency compressors that create less heat and use less energy than other refrigerators, insulation that helps keep food cold, and defrost and temperature controls that help with refrigerator efficiency.

2. Freezers

ENERGY STAR® certified freezers must be at least 10% more energy efficient than the minimum federal standard. These freezers offer improved design and insulation, high-efficiency compressors and evaporators, and temperature and defrost features to help reduce energy costs.

4. Dishwashers

On average, ENERGY STAR® certified dishwashers cost about $50 a year to run and can save you about 5,800 gallons of water over their lifetime compared to standard size dishwashers. These dishwashers often include soil sensors, improved water filtration, more efficient jets, and dish rack designs that help reduce energy and water consumption.
