How to wash a heated blanket in a washer or by hand

An electric blanket is a great way to add extra warmth to your bed on a chilly night. By using a controller to set the temperature you want, the blanket heats through wires that are coiled within the fabric. Some newer electric blankets have waterproof wiring, which can sometimes make them washable.

If you have an electric blanket that you want to clean, first check the care label for specific instructions. Because of the internal wiring system, you’ll want to follow the directions carefully when washing to make sure that the heating grid remains intact. Read on to learn the general steps in washing a heated blanket, along with other care tips.

What is the best way to wash an electric blanket?

Some electric blankets can be machine or hand-washed, although the best way to know is by checking your blanket’s care label for specific washing instructions. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals and don’t dry clean unless the care label recommends it.

Is my electric blanket machine-washable?

You can machine-wash your electric blanket as long as the care tag indicates that it is safe. Washing an electric blanket may require a gentle, short cycle on a low-speed spin with minimum agitation and specific water temperature that differs from a normal wash. Due to the heating element, extra care may be necessary.

Can I put a cover on my heated blanket?

While it may seem like a good idea to use some type of comforter cover or duvet on your heated blanket to keep it clean, you should not do so. Using an extra cover on top of it may cause the blanket to not function properly. With a regular cleaning routine, you can keep your blanket fresh and clean.

Step 3: Spot clean if needed

Check your electric blanket and pretreat any stains. Simply follow the steps below to spot clean stains before washing.

  • Step 1: Wet the stain and dab it with a mild detergent.

  • Step 2: Let the detergent sit for 20 minutes.

  • Step 3: Pat the stain with a warm, damp cloth or gently rub it with a toothbrush until the stain is gone.

  • Step 4: Rinse the affected area and press with a towel to absorb any excess water.

  • Step 5: Repeat the process two to three times if necessary.

Step 4: Place the electric blanket in washer

If loading your electric blanket into a top loading washer, gently place the blanket around the agitator or impeller to help keep the load even. For a front loading washer, evenly place the blanket in the washer drum. It’s best not to ball up the blanket as this can create an unbalanced load.

It is also recommended that you wash blankets in a large capacity washer that can accommodate bulky items like sheets, towels, large blankets and comforters. If you notice that the load is unbalanced, you can add in other blankets or towels to even it out. For optimal cleaning results, avoid overloading your machine.

Step 5: Select the wash cycle and press start

Once your electric blanket has been loaded into the machine, add the detergent to the dispenser. Select the wash cycle and water temperature indicated on the blanket’s care label. Electric blankets may require a gentle or delicate wash cycle on a low-speed spin in cool to warm water to preserve the inner wiring.
